2010 February

Board Notes - February 2010

Compiled by Toby Schwartz from minutes recorded by Sam Riviello.

These board notes cover some of the highlights of the OrigamiUSA Board meeting of February 11, 2010, for the purpose of sharing our thoughts and discussions with our membership.

President's Report

There was a memorial service for Florence Temko on February 6, 2010 in California. Vicky Mihara Avery and June Sakamoto attended the memorial and represented OrigamiUSA. A letter was read that was written by the President, Wendy. Flowers were also sent from OrigamiUSA.

Development

We are working on two jobs. The work will be done by volunteers and compensated people.

Election Committee

The committee is working on improvements to the voting process during convention, in order to make the process run smoothly and more quickly. The current working plan is to have two sessions in the Annual Meeting this June: a voting session in the early afternoon on Saturday, which is when people will cast their votes for Directors, with voting results announced during the later session (that includes everything else that usually happens at the annual meeting). This will allows more time for voting by people attending the convention and allows more time to count the in-person votes cast at the meeting. Results of the voting will be announced at the end of the later session, as usual. The Committee will make sure the new plan is thoroughly communicated to the membership as part of Election and Convention mailings and web postings.

Volunteer Recognition Committee

Nancy Schneider will design this year's pin. The pins are slated to be mailed in April, which is Volunteer Recognition Month.

The Paper

Issue #103 was mailed out February 9.

The Publications Committee and the Paper Committee will meet to work on the future of OrigamiUSA publications.

Local Area Group Conventions

OrigamiUSA has donated origami paper to the Capitol Area Paperfolders

for CenterFold. The paper was left over from a prior donation. Their convention will be held on August 20-22, 2010 in Columbus Ohio.

Legal

OrigamiUSA has now registered with the appropriate government office in order to pay sales tax in New Jersey, since The Source is now located in New Jersey.

PCOC Committee

We are awaiting final figures from PCOC 2009.

Jan Polish and Lori Gregory have looked at prospective hotels in Seattle for PCOC 2011. They will present quotes and recommendations to the Executive Committee for final approval.

Business Committee

The Business Committee will hold a retirement party for Phyliss Meth, who ran The Source for 22 years.

Origami By Children

OBC submissions are arriving in the Home-Office. The 2010 contest will be processed shortly.

Online Presence Committee

The Hamiltons will be able to make updates to The Source directly to the website for new products and inventory changes.

The cover and table of contents for Issue #103 of The Paper are on the website.

We have been working to move the Access membership database to the CiviCRM database within the next week or so. This is part of a larger project that will take place in three phases. The first phase, which is what we are now working on, is to get the records into the online database.  The second phase, later this Spring, will give members the ability to sign into the website to access members-only content.  The third phase will bring up a new version of the online Source in which members will receive their 10% discount automatically while signed into the website.

Special Folding Fun Sessions

The Spring Special Sessions brochure has been mailed out this month.

The Special Sessions Committee will meet in March to discuss future plans for Fall Special Sessions.

Gay Merrill Gross is scheduled to teach a beginner class in March and it will be offered at the member's price. Flyers will advertise this class at museum information desks and the teaching tables.

Museum Activities

There are teaching tables scheduled for February 13 –19, 2010 and March 27-April 6, 2010.

We continue to provide origami volunteers for the Museum Sleepovers.
