Venue
We've moved to Manhattan College, in a somewhat hilly and park-like setting in Riverdale NY. See the Travel page for more information about location and access. Here's a map of the campus and we'll have more detailed how-to-get-from-here-to-there information in your Survival Kit.
Here's what will be in each building:
- Registration will be on the 2nd floor of Kelly Commons
- Hospitality will be on the 5th floor of Kelly Commons
- Sales Areas will be on the 4th floor of Kelly Commons
- Exhibition will be in Smith Hall
- Public Access check-in and Public Teaching will be in Smith Hall
- Accommodations will be in Horan Hall
- Most Meals will be in Locke's Loft in Thomas Hall
- Monday Banquet will be on the 5th floor of Kelly Commons
- Annual Meeting will be on the 5th floor of Kelly Commons
- Oversized Folding will be in Smith Hall
- Late Night Folding will be in Café 1863 in Thomas Hall
- Local Area Groups Get-Together will be in the Mini Quad across the street from Kelly Commons
- Airplane Contest location to be announced
- Classes will be in various buildings, to be announced
Accommodations
We are very pleased to be able to offer low-priced accommodations at Manhattan College, in two-bedroom suites, each room with two beds, plus a private bathroom. Our last year at FIT a bed-night cost $98, plus the cost of linens. At Manhattan College, a bed-night will be $98, including linens and three meals! See the Accommodations page for more information.
Parking
Manhattan College offers free parking. If you are driving in each day, you just need to tell the Parking Attendant that you're with origami. If you are staying at the school, you will need to park in a special overnight parking area, and you will receive your parking permit when you check into Horan Hall. More detailed information is available on our Parking page.
Meals
Unlike at FIT, there are very few restaurants a short walk from the venue. We will have information available about restaurants that you can reach with a long walk or short bus ride. We highly recommend, however, that you preorder meals from the Manhattan College dining hall, where you will find a large selection in an all-you-can-eat buffet. The food is varied and fresh, and the prices very reasonable. Unfortunately, you won't be able to order meals on-site. See the Food page for more information. Note that we will have coffee, decaf and tea available in the Hospitality Area before classes, and that the Starbucks in the Lower Level of Kelly Commons will be open from 10–7.
Monday Night Banquet
This year, there will be a cash bar to purchase beer or wine during the banquet. The banquet will include tossed garden salad, broccoli, buttered noodles, chicken francese, Italian sausage & peppers, eggplant parmesan, assorted cakes, and beverages (soda, water, coffee, tea, decaf). The total cost is $58 per person. If you do not join us at the Monday Banquet, you can still purchase dinner at Locke's Loft.
Forgot Something?
Often attendees contact us to add something they forgot in their original registration such as a T-Shirt, a Collection, or a meal. To facilitate these add-ons, we have added a new registration form where you can sign up for these additional items. Please note that you must be logged in under the same website account that you used to register. This page is only for additions, not to change things from your original registration (e.g. a T-shirt size); for that you still need to email us at convention-registration [at] origamiusa.org.
Hours
We've had to adjust many hours because of the new venue. For example, because of the distance between buildings, there will be half-hour between classes rather than 15 minutes. In addition, Exhibition will close early on Saturday due to a prior commitment by Manhattan College, and After Hours Folding will end at 3am. Please see the Hours page for more detail.
Annual Meeting
This year, you don't have to come to the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting is coming to you! It will be held in the Hospitality Area from 5:45pm – 6:45pm on Saturday.
Silent Auction
This year the Silent Auction will be a venue for rare, unusual and valuable items, so if you have a signed, out-of-print book, or a t-shirt from a 1995 foreign convention, or a vest made from crane patterned fabric, this is the Area. There will still be an opportunity to donate Grandma's holiday gifts, duplicates of current in-print books, gently used t-shirts, etc. Those donations will be on tables in the Gold Mine area labeled as 'White Elephant,' and can be purchased immediately. Since we expect to have lots of white elephant items, the table will be replenished multiple times during the weekend. Be sure to check back often! And bring lots of stuff to donate – clean out your closet of those things you haven't touched in years. Remember – one person's junk is another person's treasure, and this is also an opportunity to donate to OrigamiUSA – tax letters available on request. Exhibition Closing Early Saturday
Please note that Manhattan College will take possession of the Exhibition room at 4:30pm on Saturday for a pre-arranged private event. Plan your visit accordingly. See the Exhibition page for more details.
Raffle Prizes for Volunteer Service
We really appreciate the many hours of volunteer service from our convention attendees. This year volunteers will receive a raffle ticket for each hour worked. We have gathered many wonderful surprise raffle prizes that will be awarded on Sunday night while the judging for Oversized Folding is taking place. Companions (guardians and staff) may volunteer and get raffle tickets for their folder. For more information, see the Volunteering page.
Local Area Groups Get-Together
Interested in forming a local group, or want to share your experiences? During lunch on Saturday we will have a table in the Mini Quad, near Kelly Commons, where attendees can come and meet-and-greet others with similar interests. We will have lemonade and some give-aways.
