Mastering a Model

Get a grip. Using Fuse’s Hanging Monkey model, Gay will illustrate techniques for learning a model so that it becomes part of your repertoire. You can fold it again even after you have left the class! Another cute creature may be taught as time permits. Students should be familiar with a bird base, rabbit ear folds and reverse folds. Origami teachers will also find this class illuminating.

Rest on your laurels. Simple construction and classy papers combine with Tomoko Fuse’s mathematical genius to produce these wonderful wreaths. They can be embellished with origami flowers, bunnies, or other models. Make them small and use them on greeting cards. No doubt Mary Ann will have samples to provide inspiration.

Eifel Star

Put a new spin on things. Even though it is called a star, it really looks more like a coaster and certainly can be used as one. When made 3-D, it looks like a waterwheel, pinwheel or wreath (it can be made to spin). Kay will provide unusual asymmetrically patterned paper which will make the front and back of the star look completely different. Students will have time to mix and match patterns to their hearts’ content.

Get your feet wet. Actually you’ll be getting your fingers wet with this perfect introduction to wetfolding. This technique should be in the skills repertoire of every folder, so let Doris Ruth show you how. Using large card stock, you will make the traditional Spanish box, a sturdy decorative box ideal for your candy, acorn or seashell collection. More as time permits.

Keep it simple. It is often true that simpler is better. A few flowers and leaves on a branch can convey the utmost elegance. The class will make some simple leaves and simple flowers and glue them onto a real branch. Kathryn will also discuss painting and embellishing paper with chalks and pastels. Class size limited to 10.

Everything’s coming up roses. All your friends will appreciate getting something in this attractive box, which has a lovely twist rose on the lid. Accurate precreases will make the very tricky collapse easier. So will Arlene’s meticulous instruction. You won’t be able to make them fast enough because everyone will want one of these fabulous boxes.

Mark has been using this great paper pouch model folded from wallpaper to carry his paper for the past twenty years. Paper large enough to make a pouch to hold 6” kami will be provided.

Snap to it. Learn Heinz Strobl’s technique of using strips of paper wrapped around each other to make an icosahedron. Instead of strips of paper, Faye will provide ½” shiny ribbon. She will also describe how to use the technique to make other polyhedra. Faye has taught the technique all over the world and returns to Special Session for an encore class.

On your mark, get set, fold! Here’s a fast paced class for beginners who are looking to hone their folding skills before the Convention in June. Bess will lead you through some common folds and bases using a variety of models including: Hildegard’s box, traditional tulip, jumping frog, and practical purse.
