Toshiko will help you explore ways to make the most out of used envelopes. She will discuss the choosing of models and papers for maximum effect. Although some basic materials will be provided, students are encouraged to bring a variety of envelopes of their own.

Have a ball folding roses! Or in this case, fold Talo’s modular kusudama using a variation of the Sakoda Bird Base Rose (aka Simple Swirl or Twisty Rose). Students will fold this as a 6-piece model with kami, but assembly with 12 or 30 units is possible. The decorative ball features a nice lock and some open sinks.

Golden Bowl

Fold and unfold many times, then voilà it suddenly comes together and you have a lovely bowl created by Nick Robinson! That is the fun in this class that features lots of accurate pre-creasing. Once you have finished the pre-creases, it takes but a moment to make the bowl 3D and lock the notches, resulting in a sturdy bowl with a 2-layer bottom. A crisp paper yields the best results.

Once you pick this up and play with it, you’ll never be able to put it down! This accordion-like model opens and closes in a surprising, twisty way, flipping back and forth as you manipulate it. It is endlessly fascinating to handle and you can even write surprise messages on it. The model is made from strips of paper, the number depending on how many segments you want.

Folded from a single sheet of paper, this box created by Philip Chapman-Bell has an elegant locking mechanism that secures the contents in place, making it an ideal gift box for any special occasion. Precise folding will ensure that the model will collapse in place and close properly. Thicker paper such as scrapbook paper will produce a sturdy 3-inch box with a firm lock. A second box will be taught if time permits.

Join Maria to fold her latest find, a tato designed by Jorge E. Jaramillo which is intriguing and challenging to fold. Precise folding is a plus for this model.

Expand your horizons with this mesmerizing model! Using only 8 sheets of foil, this modular by David Shall looks incredibly complicated and complex yet is fairly straightforward to fold. As with all modulars, accuracy is important. The decorative ball “expands” to make the final lock more accommodating. Wow, a model that makes it easier to lock itself!

More modular madness from Arlene! This Ekaterina Lukasheva 30-piece model was a hit at PCOC 2015 in Boulder. If you didn’t go, now is your chance to learn this tantalizing fold from Arlene. Each facet of the model comprises of a crystal-like form, hence its name. The modules are not difficult but precision folding will help in the tricky assembly.
