Diagrams and Video: Pig

In December 2018 I visited New York with my wife and in-laws. Cloe and I had been to New York before, on our honeymoon. But back then it was spring, so it was nice to see the city under a different guise. There was no snow, but it was still magical thanks to the decoration of the streets and the squares, the windows of the department stores and the general Christmas atmosphere. Plus, without the frenzy of wanting to see as much as possible as we did on our first visit, we had time to meet old and new friends.

One evening we were able to buy paper at Paper Presention and dine with Patsy, Wendy, Arlene, Tricia and Kathy and finally attend an OMG group meeting with them and Uyen, Gay, Linda, Deb and Doug. It was a pleasure for me to be able to teach them some of my simple animals.

The next day we visited the OrigamiUSA offices with Wendy and Andrea at the American Museum of Natural History. We admired the famous origami Christmas tree. It is a real wonder, you cannot dwell on a model without the eyes immediately capturing even more and more.

We ended the trip by joining Patsy and her family at their Chinese Christmas banquet. It was an honor for us to be part of their tradition, it was a tasty and funny lunch. There I thought about the fact that in the Chinese calendar every year is associated with a zodiac animal. I am a modular nut, but I've never hidden my passion for simple models. Recently I tried to design animals my 6-year-old niece could fold and had some good results. Luckily, 2019 is the year of the pig - nothing as challenging as a dragon or a tiger. So I used the base of my lion and horse and only had to work out the snout.

This is how my pig came about. It's not too difficult to fold, so do give it a try either by following the diagrams or the video tutorial by Sara Adams. The more advanced folders amongst you can make the pig more symmetrical by adding closed sinks when shaping of the head and the tail.
